TIFTON – State Route (SR) 32 traffic at 17 Mile River in Coffee County is scheduled to shift to a detour bridge Monday, Sept. 28. Moving traffic means the contractor can begin tearing out the existing bridge so it can be replaced. The detour bridge prevents traffic from taking an off-site detour.
The 17 Mile River bridge east of Douglas is one of three on SR 32 that are being replaced. The others are Otter Creek and Bear Creek. All were built in 1955 and show structural signs of age. All new bridges will have two, 12-foot travel lanes and 8-foot shoulders. The construction cost of the three bridge replacements is $13.7 million and the contractor is East Coast Asphalt LLC. All currently are scheduled to be complete next year, Bear Creek in the spring and 17 Mile River and Otter Creek in the summer.
