City of Douglas News

Posted on: December 20, 2016

On Monday, December 12, 2016, City of Douglas officials, Coffee County Board of Education officials, and concerned citizens met at City Hall to discuss plans to bring a Miracle League to Douglas. Stephanie Davis with Miracle League, gave an overview of how Miracle League can help create a safe and positive environment for special needs children in our community, as well as surrounding cities, to enjoy. Since building the first field in 2000 in Conyers, Georgia, the Miracle League has helped build over 240 fields throughout the United States; with their newest field being built in Newton County (Covington). The Miracle League provides organizations with an A-Z Manual to build a facility and instruction on how to run a Miracle League program. The League primarily assists with building a baseball field and playground for special needs children and adults to enjoy. To enable play and help prevent injuries to special needs players, Miracle League teams play on specialized turf since most wheelchairs and other devices cannot be accommodated on regular grass turf. “We are looking forward to moving on this project,” says Stevie Young, Parks and Recreation Director. “We want to provide quality of life programs for all persons in our community no matter their handicap or disability. We plan to utilize Davis Wade Park as our starting ground for a Miracle League baseball field and playground.” The program will cost approximately $750,000 for construction of the field and playground. Fundraising for construction of the field will begin as soon as possible.
