Recently, the Douglas Police Department has been made aware of several phone scams. In one of the scams the caller targets immigrants and claims to be from a local law enforcement agency. The second scam is very similar in nature, but, the caller claims to be from the IRS.

The scam that is targeting immigrants, advises that there is a problem with the Immigrant’s immigration card and/or their immigration status. The person receiving the call is advised that to correct the problem they must put money onto a gift card, green dot card, or other similar type transaction card that the caller can later access. When victims receive the IRS scam call, the caller asks for payment from the person receiving the call in various forms and is targeting anyone.

As with any scam, do not share personal or financial information over the phone.  If you receive one of these calls, even if the number showing on your caller I.D. appears to be from a Law Enforcement Agency, be aware that no Law Enforcement Agency in Coffee County nor the IRS makes calls requesting payments of any kind.  Do not send any funds as requested by the individuals. Please contact your local law enforcement immediately if you receive a call from someone stating they are with an Agency and requesting funds.

Anyone with any further information regarding theses or any other scams is asked to contact the Douglas Police Dept. at 912-384-2222 or the Tips Line at 912-260-3600. Information can also be shared on the Department’s Face Book page
