DOUGLAS MAYOR’S YOUTH COUNCIL HOLDS MONTHLY MEETING

The Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council (DMYC) held its monthly meeting on February 21, 2019, at 6pm at City Hall and recognized two outstanding youth in the community.  The council also heard presentations from Dave Hughes (Main Street Coordinator) and Stevie Young (Parks and Recreation Director). 

For the month of March, Miss Ana Escobar was chosen as the Outstanding Youth Council Member to spotlight, and Miss Jalene Debro, was chosen as the Outstanding Youth in the Community.  Jalene Debro is the daughter of Barbara Ann Debro. She is in the 8th grade. She is a member of Eastside Baptist Church.  Jalene serves in many clubs and organizations such as FBLA, Student Council, Chess Club, and Honor/ Marching band. She is one of the original members of Teen Court and has served diligently as a juror as well as recruited other youth to participate in the program.  She also has served as Clerk of Court with the Teen Court program.  

Ms. Ana “Paulina” Escobar, is the daughter of Lucy Escobar.  She is a second year Mayor’s Youth Council member.  She aspires to one day become a lawyer.  Paulina plans to take fourteen AP courses including AP U.S History, and AP Government. She aspires to also be in the top fifteen of her class, an honor graduate, and an AP Scholar.  In addition to being on the Mayor’s Youth Council, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, FBLA, Douglas-Coffee County Teen Court and several other clubs/organizations.

Applications for youth volunteers for the 2019-2020 Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council continue to be received.  To be a member of the Youth Council, a student must be a student of Coffee County High School or private/homeschools located within the city limits.  Local principals, school counselors, the Mayor, or Commissioners may nominate students.  Membership is open to grades 9-12, ages 14-19.  Meetings are be held monthly on the third Thursday of the month at City Hall at 6:00pm.

The DMYC wants to hear from citizens about youth in our community that are doing exceptional things with their lives.  To submit a youth or youth group to be recognized, please contact Dinitra Williams, Douglas Mayor’s Youth Council Coordinator, at dwilliams@cityofdouglas.com or call the City Clerk’s office at (912) 389-3405.
