ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION
The first electric lights were turned on in Douglas on May 26, 1905.  Since then, Douglas City's electrical distribution system has grown to consist of 132.15 miles of high voltage primary lines. 
The Electric Department is responsible for:
  • Distributing electric service to more than 5,000 residents
  • Maintaining 5,000 street and security lights

WATER AND WASTEWATER DISTRIBUTION
ESG Operations, Inc. is contracted by the City of Douglas for the day-to-day operations of the Water and Wastewater division.
The Water and Wastewater Division responsibilities include:
  • Maintaining the following facilities:
    • 18 wastewater lift stations
    • Four half-million gallon elevated tanks
    • Six wells
  • Pumping an average of 4.8 million gallons of water per day
  • Serving an estimated 4,700 households
  • Treating up to six million gallons of wastewater per day

NATURAL GAS DISTRIBUTION

Since 1962, the Natural Gas Department has been supplying natural gas in the city and Coffee County.  The responsibilities of the Natural Gas Department are:
  • Conducting a variety of surveys and inspections including:
    • Leak surveys
    • Regular station inspections
    • Valve inspections
    • Yearly safety inspections
  • Selling and servicing appliances
  • Supplying natural gas to:
    • 10 industrial customers
    • 280 commercial customers
    • 1,170 residential customers

Natural Gas Customer Deposits and Fees
If you own your home, your fees will be: 
  • Cut-on fee - $30
  • Deposit - $40
  • Pilot light fee - $10

If you rent your home, the Natural Gas Department will contact your landlord to sign a form stating they approve gas service at this location. If the landlord approves, your fees will be: 
  • Cut-on fee - $30
  • Deposit - $60
  • Pilot light fee - $10

Tap fees vary depending on the size of the gas line run to the location.  If natural gas service is available in your area, you will pay your deposit/fees at City Hall located at 224 E. Bryan St, Douglas, GA 31533.

The City of Douglas observed National Gas Utility Workers’ Day on Monday, March 18, 2019.  This is the fourth year in which Gas Utility Workers’ Day has been officially celebrated across the country. This day of recognition is a time when communities such as ours give recognition to the employees who provide one of their most valuable assets—their natural gas utility.

This annual nationwide event is intended to build public awareness about the hard work performed by the employees of natural gas utilities. The official Gas Utility Workers’ Day is March 18 because that is the date of the New London, Texas school explosion in 1937 that led to the widespread odorization of natural gas and an increased emphasis on safety. Safety is a vital aspect to natural gas distribution and the employees of distribution companies endeavor to make natural gas delivery as safe as possible.

Since 1962, the Natural Gas Department has been supplying natural gas in the city and Coffee County.  The responsibilities of the Natural Gas Department include conducting a variety of surveys and inspections, selling and servicing gas appliances, and supplying natural gas to customers.

Over the last 4 years, Natural Gas agricultural loads have grown significantly and commercial loads have remained steady.  The gas division currently services 52 chicken houses, 4 peanut drying operations, 2 cotton gins, 25 tobacco barns, 4 green houses for farming operations, 3 corn dryers, vineyard operation, pecan dryer, and natural gas generator to run irrigation on a pecan orchard.  In addition to these new customers, the natural gas department services 14 industrial customers, 280 commercial, and 1170 residential customers.  To continue to provide safe service, the peak shaving plant has undergone an overhaul with equipment upgrades. Natural Gas line extensions were made for the Premium Peanut Oil operation and for Elixir’s Anodizing facility.  The City of Douglas constructed a Compressed Natural Gas Station in 2014.  The Compressed Natural Gas station is running on average about 8100 GGE's per month which produces $20,250.00 revenue and the loan for the CNG station loan has been paid in full. 

The City of Douglas looks forward to continuing to bring safe, reliable natural gas into homes and businesses.  As the cleanest burning fossil fuel, natural gas can help achieve energy security and build a more competitive economy. ESG Operations, Inc. is contracted by the City of Douglas for the day-to-day operations of the Public Works division.
The mission of the Public Works division is to provide and maintain the city’s street, sanitation, stormwater, traffic control, animal control, and engineering for the protection of the public and improvement of the quality of life for the residents, businesses and visitors of Douglas.  We strive to provide quality services, within available resources, to our customers in a timely and efficient manner.  We provide these services as well as support economic growth, public health, personal safety. Our personnel also serve as first-responders in emergency situations. 

Divisions

Regular/Recycling Pickup Schedule - Regular trash carts are picked up Monday-Thursday beginning at 6am.  Please place cart at proper location on the night before pickup.  Recycling is every other Friday.

Mosquito Control Program
Citizens can control mosquitoes by removing standing or stagnant water that can be found in birdbaths, swimming pools, wheelbarrows, ceramic pots, pet dishes, etc. Eliminating tall grass, weeds, and excess vegetation around your home will also help to control mosquitoes.  To protect your family from “the bite”, stay indoors at dawn, dusk, and early evening when mosquitoes are more active and remember to apply insect repellent.
